Get SHINY at the WorkHouse Arts Center

  • Lorton WorkHouse Arts Center Workhouse Road Lorton, VA, 22079 United States (map)

Come learn the art of gilding and mixed media with me Saturday August 6th at the Lorton WorkHouse Arts Center in Lorton, Virgina.

I will be in Gallery W9 at the Lorton WorkHouse Arts Center from 11AM to 7PM demonstrating metal leafing techniques, gilding, and acrylic techniques.  Come see me and learn something fun!

The techniques and materials that you learn to use can be extended to apply to an interesting picture frame that you purchased, or that amazing yard sale find.  Even something as large as a piece of furniture can easily be enhanced with leaf and paint. Whether it's your goal to learn a marketable skill, or just to enhance something around your house,  this is a great place for you to learn.

For more in-depth instruction, take a workshop with me. At the completion of any of the workshops you will leave with two ready to hang art works, as well as kit of materials and enables you to continue your exploration at home.  Suitable for adult and teenage participants, all materials are non-toxic and solvent free with no strong smells.

Everything you need will be provided and there will be a materials fee for each workshop to cover those consumables.  Participants are also free to bring some of their favorite colors of acrylic paint.

Workshops run 10-4, and can actually run a little later if we are all having too much fun to leave. Light snacks and beverages provided, and we encourage you to bring your lunch with you.  Refrigerators are available to store your food during the day.

One day WorkShop: Reflected Light

Dates: September 24th and January 28th

You will use canvas, adhesive glue, walnut medium, acrylic paint, and acrylic glaze in a multiple step process to produce a piece of art. Canvas, paint, adhesive, and foil will be provided. Explore the contrast of rich, saturated color with reflected light and metallic foils. Students will turn two 6 x 12 panels into a work of art.  Non-toxic, solvent free acrylic paint and mediums will be used.  The surface for this class is canvas.

Two day Workshop: Acrylic Illumination

November 5-6 and March 11-12

Using luminous metallic surfaces, students will use acrylic to create translucent and opaque layers of color. Using techniques like glazing, layering, sanding, and texture mediums, students will turn two 6 x 12 panels into a work of art. The surface for this class is a panel, allowing for more luminance to be available from the foil techniques.
